I am a Catholic iconographer based in Brighton, UK, and trained under Aidan Hart at the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts iconography programme.
“When He who, having been the consubstantial Image of the Father, emptied Himself by taking the form of a servant, thus becoming bound in quantity and quality, having taken on the carnal image, then paint and make visible to everyone Him who desired to become visible .” – St. John Damascene
I feel honoured to be part of this continuing tradition and its revival in the western Church. Using egg tempera with natural pigments on gesso, and working unhurriedly and prayerfully, I endeavour to maintain the highest standards and ancient techniques of this uniquely beautiful art form.
I am a member of the Wellspring Community, Brighton, and draw upon the Benedictine tradition and liturgy in my daily life as wife, mother, and part time lay chaplain to Brighton University.
Previous religious works have been commissioned by Westminster Cathedral and I have 16 pieces in the V&A museum collection. In December 2018 I was interviewed on BBC Radio 4’s programme ‘The Creation of an Icon’ speaking about what iconography means to me. You can hear the episode here (5:25).
I was invited back to speak on Radio 4’s Beyond Belief programme on the subjest of the Virgin Mary in December 2020. You can hear the episode here (11:29).
